National Scrapbooking Day Approaches!

(International) National Scrapbooking Day (NSD) is in May, so it's time to start thinking about your plans and shopping for the big day!

I'm approaching it by checking back through my (many!) wish lists at my favourite stores, seeing which products I like the best, and making a list, ready for NSD.

As for challenges and activities, I can't wait to see what will be happening!

Once the stores start advertising NSD, I'll be looking for the sales and planning my day (or weekend) around all the exciting things to do! Then I'll delegate the housework and childcare... this is a weekend of fun for Mum!

My favourite journal is leather-bound and hand-made. It smells like leather, it feels like real paper and has texture, it's embossed, it looks... simply beautiful.

Stuck for journaling ideas?

Sometimes I find that I'm lacking inspiration for a new layout. I can't find just the right photo or kit to work with, or I have a great photo but don't quite know what to put with it.

Do you have the same problem at times? Fear not, there are many wonderful creative sites which are there to help!

I thought today I'd profile a few sites which have lots of journaling ideas and layout prompts, and I'll look at some of the commercial products in a future post.

Friday Letters - This is a lovely blog which asks a question of the week, and tells a short story to accompany it. Bev, the writer, encourages you to write the answer as a letter to a child, a friend, or even yourself. Some might like to add to their letter with photographs. For example, this week's question asks: Do you believe we are always given what we need?
Creativity Portal is an awesome site with an Imagination Prompt Generator (can you accept yourself as you are? Why did you...?), seasonal and holiday prompts (eg for Spring: When winter ends and spring begins, do you really notice the transformation of life happening all around you? What do you notice the most?), photo prompts including adventure, daily photo prompts, and others.
Daydreaming on Paper - Random questions for inspiration, such as "list 10 things that simply bore you to tears" and "what is the worst thing you have ever done to your hair?" (warning - site's popups are a bit slow)
Abundance Blog at Marelisa Online - Another list of lots of journaling prompts, including ideas for lists to create, confessions, quotes, "3 things".
How about journal prompts for the fearless? for giving thanks? for getting inspired? for tickling your funny bone? You'll find these and many others at Writing Forward.
At JournalingPrompts.com, click on a star, any star, for a journaling prompt. Similarly, at CreativeWritingPrompts.com, click on a number for a prompt.
Creative Writing Now - What would be the guest list at your dream party? What would the various guests talk about? And lots of other questions.
Illustrated Watercolour Journals might provide some inspiration for jotting down daily happenings... in either digital scrapping or painting.
The Journal is journaling software which includes prompts. There's also a list of some prompts here. There are some articles too, such as a baby journal, "do I already know the answer to this?", and gratitude journals.
Pixylin's Journal Prompts has a staggering 728 prompts in one list, ranging from #1 What is your interpretation of one of your recent dreams? through to #728 Which do you prefer, inside or outside? Why?
You can create a Nature Journal following the information Donna provides on her site.
And if you like the ideas of drawing as part of journalling, you can also work on your own drawing journal at Squidoo with some fabulous drawing prompts.

There you go! There must be a couple of thousand ideas here! Hopefully one or another of these sites will help pull you through those uninspired days.

Greetings from... STS Blog Train! Welcome to Tassie!

Wow, it's July already and time for another awesome freebie blog train. This month, STS has come up with "Greetings from..." Since we're located all over the world, you'll see quite a few destinations!

My kit is "Greetings from Tassie"... Tasmania, that is. Tasmania is the beautiful island state of Australia... last stop before Antarctica! Land of Tasmanian Devils (think Taz from Looney Tunes cartoons), apples, and a couple of centuries ago, home to many of England's transported convicts.

It's also a fabulous place to visit and I've included a couple of links to tourism sites... just in case you're in need of a holiday destination!

Isn't it amazing we're almost halfway through the year already? I'm not sure where all the time is going, but I do know what I'll be doing on the 1st of July - Blog Train day!!

Lots of forums host a blog train early in the month and Stuff to Scrap (STS) is no exception. For July we have a BT called "Greetings from...". I'm really excited about this as there are gorgeous colours and some amazing freebie kits are already in the line-up.

Romance kit... just beautiful (and freebie)

Here's a beautiful kit I discovered at ScrappinDigiKreations, Romance by Cay'sCreation Designs.
I fell in love with the gorgeous gazebo and just had to use it in a layout:

While it's a love and romance kit with lots of the elements clearly around that theme, it can be used for other things. I thought it went well with these photos of my Ryan, taken when we visited the tulips at Table Cape, northern Tasmania in late 2007.

Next challenge sites and freebie

How did you find the challenges at Digital Scrapbook Pages yesterday? I hope you enjoyed browsing the challenges there!

Today I have two smaller challenge forums for you, Digital Scrap Cafe and ScrappinDigiKreations. This is part 2 in my list of scrapping challenge sites.

Digital Scrap Cafe (http://digitalscrapcafe.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7)

Digital Scrap Cafe has the following challenges:

Template challenge
Designer spotlight
Scraplift challenge
Coffee cup (a recipe-style challenge)
AMC - Anita's Monthly Challenge - varies. In March it's a challenge to scrap a celebrity, but there's a catch - you have to choose someone whose name starts with the same letter as your own! (You also have to use Anita's products.)
Clean and simple - using white space in a layout.

Challenges updated: generally monthly, although some challenges seem to be more ad-hoc.

Prizes: For each challenge completed, you earn 4 or 5 digi-bytes - usually with a bonus if you use DSC products. Earn 50 digi-bytes and you get a $5 coupon to the store! There are some extra bonuses, like additional discounts, on offer for the overall winners of challenges.

Do you need to use their products? It depends on the challenge - check the rules.

ScrappinDigiKreations has a small range of challenges, but they are fun!

Challenges include:

Create a card based on a sketch
It's Elemental - use a specific element on a page

Challenge Prizes, Challenge Sites and freebie!

I'm back with part 1 of the list of challenge forums today. Before you start challenges though, I wanted to tell you about the common types of posting bonuses / prizes that are available. Keep reading... there's a freebie for you at the end. Once I've posted about a number of these forums, I'll put together a post with all the links in one place, and ask you to tell me if I've missed any.

Prizes and Posting Bonuses

The minikit / part of a megakit prize: some sites reward people with part of a kit for posting their layout. I love these challenges. I get a prize and they keep me coming back (and often heading to the store!). The downside: sometimes you won't like the kits.
The points system. Post a layout, get X points, and when you get enough points you can redeem them for products in the shop. You get to choose what you'd like. The downside: you have to wait until you've done several challenges to redeem your points. If you're a challenge-o-holic, though, this won't be a problem! As my 7yo says, sweet!
The big prize system. One winner, and perhaps a runner-up or two, are chosen, and they get the prize. The downside: you might not win. However, I've noticed these challenges can be less popular so there's still a good chance to come away with a prize.

Of course, many of the challenges come complete with free templates, wordart or minikits - a double bonus!

One more thing you should check... most challenge sites have rules about whether you need to use their products to qualify for the posting bonus. Some require exclusive use of their products, others ask you to use at least some elements by their designers.

If you need to buy a kit, think about whether you like it and will use it again, and whether the posting bonus is worth any expense.

Let's start on the challenge site list!

One blog entry can't possible cover all the available sites. I'll break this list down and give you one, two or three each day. That way, you'll have a chance to check them out, choose what you like, instead of becoming befuddled by too much choice. The one I've chosen to start with is a big one, so I'll just cover it for today.

Prizes: A section from a mega-kit for each challenge. One layout from the gallery is chosen each day as "layout of the day". You get a special blinkie to use if you want to!

Do you need to use their products for a posting bonus? Not exclusively. Most challenges ask that you use at least 3 elements from their designers... but they really love it if you use their products! There are a couple where you need to buy a kit, and a couple more where they give you a minikit to use for free.

The forum is extensive so check it out while you're there!

Do you need to be challenged? (with freebie!)

There are some fantastic challenges out in there in digiscrap-land. Some of them aren't easy to find at first, so I thought I'd put together a list to help you out! First, I wanted to tell you about some of the common challenges that you'll see out there.

Common types of challenges

Scrap daily - for people who are working on a P365 (project 365). Make a layout each day (or 31 layouts in a month with 31 days, and so on) to get the posting bonus.
Ad challenge - an advertisement is shown, create your own page using the colours, layout etc for inspiration
Colour challenge - a colour palette is given, create either a layout or mini-kit based on the palette.
Template challenge - I love these! Pick up the (usually free) template and use it to create a layout.
Wordart challenge - use the given wordart on a page. These come in various 'flavours' including scripture challenges.
Desktop challenge - create a desktop background for your computer.
Clean & Simple (C&S) - create a really simple but effective layout
Clutter it - start with a simple template or layout, and add elements to jazz it up
Recipe challenge - these come in two flavours. One type has you scrap a recipe for a favourite meal or dish. The other will give you a list of ingredients - eg 2 flowers, one frame, one ribbon - which you need to use on your page to win the prize.
Font challenge - use a given font
Scraplift - a layout is shown as inpiration for your own designing
Journalling challenge - journal around a specific topic, or create a page where the journalling takes centre stage, rather than the photo or elements.
Quote / motto / slogan challenge - use a given quote on a page, and let it inspire your layout.
Calendar challenge - create a calendar page
Lyrics / song challenge - use the lyrics to a song to create your page
QP exchange - create a quickpage from a specific kit. At the end of the challenge, you get everyone's QPs
Swap - you send a photo to another challengee, and they send you their photo. You scrap each other's photos
Kit challenge - design a page from a specific kit. (Similar challenges for elements are around, too)
Progressive scrap - instructions are given progressively over several days. You can't change anything on the page you've already done!
Photo techniques - these focus more on the photo and how it is treated, and often teach a new technique as well - such as converting a colour photo to a B&W photo with a small coloured section.

Do you know about Wordle?

Wordle is a fabulous tool for creating word clouds. You copy text in, choose a font, colour scheme and layout and - hey presto! - your very own word cloud.

Get started at www.wordle.net.

How could you use it in your journaling?
- copy text - perhaps from a journal - into Wordle, and it will show a word cloud based on the words in your journal
- copy in your blog link - it will create the blog word cloud (mine is shown below)
- copy in the link to your favourite blog
- use the word cloud together with a single photo, for a clean and simple page
- use the word cloud as background paper on a layout
- search for word clouds you like in their gallery
- suggestions are welcome... add them in the comments below.

A word on using wordle for images:
The easiest way I've found to use a wordle image is:
- once you've created your image, click the "open in new window" button beneath the image
- use Ctrl + PrintScreen (often shown as PrtScr on keyboards) to copy the image, or use an add-on in your browser
- open a new document in your digital scrapping software, and paste in the image.

Wordle do ask for acknowledgement if you download and use an image, but I think that's a small price to pay!

A little magic... and a freebie

I love looking at kits and designs from all over the world, and there are some fantastic ones coming from Europe.

Rena has some beautiful kits on her blog here, including My Little Magic World, here, shown below. Google Translate does a reasonable job of translating between languages - but even where it doesn't, it's usually fairly easy to find download links and even navigate through foreign scrapbooking shops!

I enjoyed making a layout for this kit, so I've also made it into a QP for you:

Layout of the Day and Freebie

I've been entering challenges on the www.digitalscrapbookingpages.com forum. I'm delighted - and somewhat astonished! - that I was awarded layout of the day for this page featuring my elder son's first visit to the snow:

I used Natasha Nast's gorgeous new kit, Winter Fairytale, (available here) for the background and most of the elements; with a mask by Kathryn Estry's Clipping Masks Vol 2, and frame from Lucy Hampton's Winter Wonderland sampler.
